VO2 Max, Lactate & INSCYD PPD Testing

We offer full metabolic testing both in and out of the lab. Having been partnered with INSCYD since 2017, we now use their Power Performance Decoder (PPD) to offer field testing for runners and cyclists.

What is PPD? A revolution of performance diagnostics!

At Endurance, we’ve always used lab diagnostics to measure aerobic and anaerobic capacities, and fat and carbohydrate combustion rates. Field testing could – at best - estimate only the athlete’s FTP values, resulting in an insufficient way of benchmarking performance. For this reason we are excited to have INSCYD’s Power-Performance Decoder (PPD) in our suite of services.

PPD is the first and only tool combining physiological lab data (lactate values or VO2 captured in the lab or field) with field-tested powermeter data.

PPD offers up the following data

FITNESS ASSESSMENT:

Respiratory gas exchange exercise threshold testing (Gx) for cycling, running or rowing.

Gx testing protocols, done with the right equipment, provide in-depth analysis of the body's response to exercise. The results of this test include:

  • Body profile measurement
  • Identification of key metabolic thresholds to establish training zones
  • Caloric expenditure at varying levels of intensity
  • Fuel utilization (contributions of fat and carbohydrate) during exercise
  • Measurement of cardiorespiratory fitness, VO2 max
  • Maximal aerobic power
  • Cycling or Running Economy

These variables allow us to make customized exercise/training and nutrition recommendations and/or training plans and track adaptations throughout a season. Each test is followed by a one-on-one consultation with an exercise physiologist.

ELITE PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT:

Gas Exchange (Gx) and Blood Lactate Production Rate (VLamax) Combination Protocol for cycling, running, rowing or swimming.

A specific protocol is set up to provide a complete spectrum of information for the athlete. Typically, this type of assessment is reserved for seasoned athletes with testing experience. Each test is followed by a one-on-one consultation with an exercise physiologist.

Blood lactate testing protocols provide insight into how an athlete manages emissions produced by the working muscles during exercise. Similar to the gas exchange exercise test, blood lactate protocols allow us to identify key metabolic thresholds to: establish training zones, make appropriate training/exercise recommendations, and track adaptations throughout a season of training.

However, there are several shortcomings when it comes to interpretation of a traditional lactate concentration curve, especially when protocols do not include respiratory gas exchange measurements. A traditional lactate concentration & intensity curve can be misleading, as it does not accurately portray the interaction of one's aerobic and anaerobic capacities. Therefore, to attain accurate assessment of these capacities, we also measure the maximal lactate production rate (VLamax).

Advanced metabolic calculations and specific protocols are required for detailed results, which is why eLab is partnered with INSCYD. INSCYD is a validated algorithm developed by world-class level coach and physiologist Sebastian Weber, which provides us the tools to analyze the lactate and VO2 data to create a more complete metabolic profile. Methods include a moderate-length step protocol followed by a short-duration VO2max protocol. The optimal protocol is tailored according to the needs of the athlete.

A combined Gx & blood lactate assessment, using INSCYD analytics, measures the following variables:

  • Body profile measurement (%body fat)
  • VO2 max
  • Caloric expenditure and fuel utilization
  • Maximal Fat & Carbohydrate burning (Fatmax & Carbmax)
  • Training Thresholds for both power, pace and heart rate
  • Lactate production rate (VLamax)
  • Maximal Lactate Steady State (MLSS)/Anaerobic Threshold (AT)
